Description
The Site comprised two pasture fields equating to approximately 6.7 hectares located to the east of East Leake. The Site lay to the south of Costock Road and was bounded by a residential area to the west and fields to the south and east.
Topsoil was removed using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket, working under the constant direct supervision of a suitably experienced archaeologist. Topsoil was removed in a series of level spits down to the level of the upper archaeological horizon, or the natural geology, whichever was reached first.
The only archaeological features in the eight excavated trenches were north-south aligned furrows, two in one trench and four in another trench, which roughly corresponded with a series of possible parallel linear anomalies identified during the geophysical survey. No artefactural material was recovered from any of the evaluation trenches and no
further archaeological features were identified in any of the other trenches.
