Description
The development site for the construction of sheltered apartments is located at Church Street, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. The site is bounded to the east by Church Street, to the north by Derby Road, and to the south by Woodland Way.
All invasive groundworks were monitored by an experienced archaeologist. If topographical or archaeological deposits were located these were to be identified to the contractor to allow sufficient time for their investigation and recording. The archaeologist was present during the site strip and subsequent trenching for services and foundations, access road and pumping station. The spoil was also searched for artefacts.
No archaeological deposits were observed in any of the groundworks, and it appears that the site had been terraced, for 19th-20th century industrial buildings, the footings of which were noted during the excavations. No pre-modern artefacts were noted. Any medieval or post-medieval occupation is likely to have fronted on to Church Street or Derby Road. If present this had been disturbed by the 19th-20th century development on the site.
Although not observed during the watching brief the presence of a possible bell pit located by the contractors attests to the exploitation of the coal seams within the area.
