Description

The development site is located on the south-west edge of East Leake, Nottinghamshire. The site comprises a triangular plot of land, c.5.6ha in size. The site is bounded by Woodgate Road to the south-east, the cutting of the Great Central Railway to the west, and by residential plots on Sycamore Road and Orchard Close to the north-east. The evaluation comprised the excavation of seven 50m x 2m trenches. No significant archaeological remains were found. Medieval ridge and furrow cultivation extended across most of the site, although not in the south. A linear feature was seen representing a drainage or boundary ditch following the former continuation of Rempstone Road, which was liad out in 1799. There was no sign of a road or track surface suggesting that at this time Rempstone Road was a bridleway or lightly made track.
