Description

The Worksop STW is situated to the south-east of the town, in an area of mixed arable and pasture land. It lies immediately north of the railway line between Sheffield and Lincoln, while the River Ryton and Chesterfield Canal both pass the works a short distance further south. A watching brief was maintained over further areas of groundworks associated with the scheme. These comprised the remaining area of the extension, the temporary access track to the north-west of the extension area, and the remaining area of the new access road south of the Chesterfield Canal. Soilstripping in the new access road and extension area revealed extensive and in many places deep areas of subsoil, which would not be removed as part of the scheme. Two areas in the western part of the permanent access road, each 15m by 15m in size, were restripped through subsoil deposits, to test whether archaeological remains lay beneath this material. Two further areas were also restripped in the south-east part of the extension area, to test the nature of two linear geophysical anomalies of uncertain origin. Monitoring and the test trenches revealed no further archaeological remains.
