Abstract/Summary
This document presents the results of archaeological excavation, monitoring and palaeoenvironmental sampling during groundworks associated with the extension to the Worksop Sewage Treatment Works (STW), Nottinghamshire.
Excavation and monitoring has uncovered part of a Roman-period farmstead along the route of a new access road to the STW. Parts of two enclosures and related field ditches were revealed to the south of Rayton farm, on ground overlooking the River Ryton. The farmstead was probably occupied in the 3rd and early 4th centuries AD, but there is evidence for activity on the site earlier in the Roman period, possibly starting in the late 1st century. The ditch of one enclosure had then been used as a rubbish dump, and contained a large quantity of Roman pottery (over 600 fragments).
The site lies near the edge of an area in which cropmark evidence for Roman period rural settlement is rich, characterised by ‘brickwork’ pattern fields and accompanying enclosed farmsteads. Few such sites have been excavated however, either in whole or in part, and this is only the third excavated site of this period around Worksop. These factors make the work as part of the STW extension of considerable importance for better understanding Roman rural settlement in this region. The remains, due to the overlying depth of soil, would have been unlikely to have produced cropmarks seen by aerial survey, and even the geophysical survey carried out prior to excavation identified only the strongest anomalies as enclosure ditches.
Elsewhere on the site, monitoring and the test trenches revealed no further archaeological remains. Palaeoenvironmental coring beside the River Ryton did not reveal any preserved plants or pollen, due to periodic drying of the ground.
