Description

The Worksop STW is situated to the south-east of the town, in an area of mixed arable and pasture land. It lies immediately north of the railway line between Sheffield and Lincoln, while the River Ryton and Chesterfield Canal both pass the works a short distance further south. A series of palaeoenvironmental soil cores was taken on the route of the new access road, immediately north of the River Ryton. An auger survey was carried out during February 2013 in order to accurately locate peat layers within the footprint of the access road. The site was re-visited in July 2013 when a deep construction trench was excavated, in order to more fully examine the peat observed in the auger survey cores. Two further samples were taken during this second stage. Palaeoenvironmental coring beside the River Ryton did not reveal any preserved plants or pollen, due to periodic drying of the ground.
