The development site occupies an area of land measuring north-west of the village of Holbeck and west of the A60 Mansfield Road with the town of Creswell to the east. Various types of excavation were required during this watching brief to facilitate different aspects of the solar farm infrastructure. These consisted of haul roads to allow access to the site, various widths and depths of trenching for the purpose of laying ducts/cables connecting the solar panels to inverter stations, sub stations and ultimately the external electricity supply. As a result different sizes of machine excavators were required which ranged from a 20 ton tracked machine with a 1.2m toothless bucket to a smaller bobcat machine using 400mm and 600mm buckets. In all cases topsoil was removed first then subsequent layers removed in spits of approximately 150mm. All archaeological deposits were manually cleaned where appropriate and all spoil heaps were thoroughly checked for flint artefacts. Continuous archaeological observation of all phases of groundwork revealed a limited number of features, similarly only a few finds were recovered. In total four linear features were observed as having archaeological potential. All were very shallow features which shared similar dimensionsand were on the same NE-SW alignment; it is unclear whether these were individual truncated features of an earlier field system or if they are simply the remnants of medieval ridge and furrow. A single possible (E-W?) linear gully was noted at the northern end of the site which was undated. Included in the list of limted finds was 1 flint object (possibly debatage) and a handle sherd of 13-14th C date.
