Description

A metal detecting survey was conducted in the Sewage Works, Samworth Farms in the hopes of gaining more knowledge about Roman interaction around the site. In 2016, they re-examined the northern half of the field, with particular emphasis on extending the area near the drainage ditch and pond where we had found Romano-British coins in 2005 and 2013, but extending westwards towards the road. Roman coins were found in two main sites. The first was at the periphery of the area near the pond previously examined in 2013. The second was a localised area in the north-west corner of the field very close to the road. From the first area we recovered 9 coins. Apart from one coin which was identifiable as a nummus of Magnentius, the remainder were extremely worn and not accurately identifiable, although their size, thinness and general characteristics suggested a 4th century date. By contrast, at the new site near the road we found 20 coins, of which only 6 were worn, and 13 were well-preserved and identifiable. One was a fragment only, and also could not be identified. Of the identifiable coins, the earliest were a barbarous radiate of 253-270 AD and a Claudius II silver coin of 268-270 AD. The remainder were bronze coins from the House of Constantine from 306-380 AD, with distinct and recognisable patterns on the reverse. The only other Romano-British artefact found on this occasion was a brooch of horse and rider type of 2nd century AD. Among the other identifiable and dateable finds from the 2016 survey were: a) a ring-dot brooch of Frankish-Merovingian equal-armed type of the 7th to 9th century. This was found at the north-west corner site close to the road, along with the Roman coins already described from the site. The following four items were found just south of the drainage ditch/pond area of coin finds: b) a hammered silver long cross penny of John I of Brabant, c. 1275-1285 c) a hammered silver long-cross penny of Alexander III of Scotland, c. 1250-1280 d) a jetton of Edward II, the reverse featuring a three-armed cross, c. 1307-1327 e) a Commonwealth silver penny, pierced of 1649-1660
