Description
The proposed development site lies 500m southwest of the centre of the village as defined by the parish church of All Saints. The site lies east of Hemplands Lane, north of Grasmere Farm and west of Cuckstool Dyke and encompasses some 3.36 hectares.
The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd. Readings were taken at 0.25m intervals along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 3600 sampling points in a full 30m x 30m grid.
In the eastern field, the large area of parallel east-west linear anomalies is highly suggestive of a medieval ridge and furrow field system.
The âTâ shaped anomaly which can be seen to the north of the ridge and furrow possibly represents the ditches that made an entrance into the medieval field system.
The weaker positive anomaly in the west field is possibly an old field boundary or a track way.
A number of discrete positive responses might represent isolated pit features but these are not strong and would be difficult to interpret on the basis of form alone.
