Abstract/Summary
Detailed magnetic gradiometer survey was undertaken in connection with proposed development on land off Hemplands Lane, Sutton-on-Trent. The survey area totalled c. 3.3ha.
A study of historic maps shows that the proposed development area has been open agricultural land throughout the latter part of the post-medieval period. Furthermore, the site would appear to have remained untilled and in use as pasture or meadow. Saxon and medieval features have been found nearby.
The survey identified an area of likely medieval ridge and furrow, and two positive linear anomalies that may be related to the agricultural use of the fields. In addition discrete positive responses might represent isolated pit features, but these are not strong and are difficult to interpret on the basis of form alone.
