Description

The development site is an irregular-shaped block of land measuring 0.34 ha which contained a former livery yard and outbuildings, previously associated with Manor Farm. It is located to the south-east of the centre of the village, on the south side of Moor Lane as it exits the village, and just before it bears right. A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during all construction groundworks at Manor Farm between June 2011 and January 2012. It comprised the excavation and cleaning of all archaeological features exposed; the recovery of artefactual or ecofactual remains, and detailed recording. Apart from a single sherd of well-worn Roman pottery, no finds or features pre-dating the early modern period were encountered during the monitoring and recording programme. This suggests that, whilst the plot has been directly attached to buildings since the medieval period, it saw no occupation that left an archaeological trace prior to the 18th century. From this point, the site would have seen increasing activity until the construction of the threshing barn in the early 20th century, and its subsequent re-building, until its recent demolition.
