Description
The proposed development site is located adjacent to Forest Corner, on the northern edge of Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire at the south-eastern edge of the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, across land to the east and west of Swinecote Road B6034. The proposed development site comprises approximately 4.8ha, consisting of publicly accessible woodland and amenity grassland at the southern end of Sherwood Forest Country Park, including fields which have previously been subject to modern cultivation.
The gradiometer survey was carried out using Bartington Grad601-2 fluxgate gradiometer. Data was collected on an east-west alignment using zig-zag traverses, with a sample interval of 0.25m and a traverse interval of 1m.
The gradiometer survey has identified a small number of linear anomalies of archaeological interest or origin.
Across most of the areas a number of discrete linear trends were identified but due to their poor strength and patterning only a tentative interpretation can be formed as to their origin. Some of these
particularly in the east of the survey area could turn out to be geological variations.
A number of agricultural trends most likely related to former ploughing regimes have also been identified.
A large spread of magnetic disturbance has been observed across all four datasets, relating to either modern features such as paths, hard standing or likely landscaping of the amenity grassland. A further area in the east relates to a probable former orchard.
