Abstract/Summary
An archaeological geophysical (gradiometer) survey was undertaken to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains on amenity grassland and agricultural land at Sherwood Forest, Edwinstowe.
The proposed development site comprises approximately 4.8ha, consisting of publicly accessible woodland and amenity grassland at the southern end of Sherwood Forest Country Park, including fields which have previously been subject to modern cultivation. A permanent fairground is also located within the western end of the survey area. The site is bisected north-to-south by the B6034 Swinecote Road.
The results of the survey identified a number of discrete geophysical trends that are potentially archaeological in origin, or could relate to geological processes, located particularly in the eastern extent of the survey area.
A number of agricultural plough lines were also identified, as well as frequent regions of magnetic disturbance, most likely the result of modern activity and landscaping, some of which were visible at the time of survey.
