Description
The site encompassed a square area of land measuring approximately 64m x 47m and is close proximity to school buildings and within an area where landscaping for school facilities was evident.
Topsoil stripping began in the S-E corner of the site and was pulled back in a westerly direction respecting the tarmac path that divided the site. Once the southern half of the site was stripped the same process was repeated on the northern side of the path; the path itself was left in place as a solid haul road till such a time when all soil removal was no longer required.
All features were hand cleaned and planned and a percentage excavated to demonstrate plan/form and to recover any datable artefacts.
Spoil and archaeological levels were searched with a metal detector.
This strip, map and sample exercise has demonstrated that, despite the close proximity to the school and landscaping in the immediate vicinity, in situ archaeological remains have survived at the site. In total fourteen linear features were observed, and these can be interpreted as the remnants of medieval/post medieval furrows associated with the ridge and furrow open field system that existed in the area until the 14th century, when land-use perhaps changed to pasture. Furthermore, five features observed cutting
across are characteristic of scoring caused by later ‘ploughing out’ and levelling of the ridge and furrow; finds from these features indicate that this occurred at some point during the 19th century indicating that the site had been brought back into cultivation at this point.
A small quantity of artefacts were recovered from the furrows; this included one piece of 13th/14th century pottery and several other sherds ranging in date from the 17th to 19th centuries
