Title An Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample Exercise at Toot Hill School, Bingham
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2013

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during topsoil removal in anticipation of the construction of a new school block. The site encompassed a square area of land measuring approximately 64m x47m and is close proximity to school buildings and within an area where landscaping for school facilities was evident. Topsoil stripping revealed fourteen N-S linear features which are interpreted as medieval/post medieval furrows associated with the open field system. A further five features were observed which may be interpreted as evidence for the levelling of the ridge and furrow during the 19th century. A small quantity of artefacts were recovered from the furrows; this included one piece of 13th/14th century pottery and several other sherds ranging in date from the 17th to 19th centuries.
