Description

An archaeological site inspection condition was imposed on planning consent granted for the erection of a garage to the rear of ‘West View’, Church Lane, Gamston. The site was visited by the author on 21/07/2007 when the foundations for the extension had been excavated. Spoil had been removed from the locality so it was not possible to examine spoil heaps for artefacts. The base of the foundation trench was well trampled and numerous minor slips of spoil from the trench sides and modern ground surface obscured the view and reduced visibility. All available trench sections were carefully examined by eye for archaeological finds or features and a number of sections were photographed. Bright and low winter sunshine reduced visibility somewhat. No cleaning was undertaken. Due to the apparent lack of archaeological features, no measured plans or sections were produced. Despite the proximity of the medieval church (the eastern churchyard wall being 50m from the site), the apparent lack of ditches, pits, post holes or other features suggests that the medieval settlement of Gamston was not located in this immediate vicinity, or at least not in the precise area impacted by this development.
