Description

The site is located to the north of Gringley on the Hill in North Nottinghamshire, on the edge of the extensive low lying carr lands which exist in this part of the county. Around 70 metres of track to the north of the road was walked. The field surface was casually scanned either side of the path whilst it was walked. A distance of probably two to three metres out from the path was examined, although artefacts within the first half metre to metre from the edge of the path would have been most obvious to the walker. More attention was paid to the ground on the western side of the path than the eastern, for no particular reason. Once artefacts had been spotted, the camera was retrieved from the car and finds were photographed and their positions paced in. The paced distances were checked on return to the office based on the location of the sandy rise and certain bushes visible on modern vertical aerial photographs. The paced distances appeared to be quite accurate and little rectification was required. Artefacts were left in the field, excepting the core which was retrieved. The field had been ploughed and very recently rolled and therefore the surface was not well weathered, not ideal conditions for maximum visibility of any artefacts present in the ploughsoil. Traces of slight ditches were visible along the edge of the path and evidence existed of recently removed hedges which had once lined the path. On the western side of the path four heat affected stones were seen within a metre of the edge of the path, all within roughly ten metres of the highest point of the mound. Along the eastern side of the path only one artefact was discovered, a worked out flake core situated about three metres from the eastern edge of the path and off the top of the rise, on its southern slopes.
