Description
The site is located in a slight valley which separates the villages of North and South Wheatley. It is on the east side of the north south road which links the two settlements.
The site was visited by the author on 26/04/2007. Excavations were to a maximum depth of 0.2m and had been dug by machine fitted with a toothed bucket. The machine had tracked freely over the stripped surface. The works included curvilinear paths, several benches, an area of hard standing in the middle of the site and a shelter. The concrete raft for the shelter had already been constructed by the time of the visit. The remaining stripped surfaces and sections were examined and photographed (where appropriate) and the surface of the spoil heaps were inspected for artefacts.
Consequently, no archaeological features were visible. However, investigation of the stripped surface and scanning of the spoil heaps yielded an assemblage of early post medieval ceramics and later glass, along with a few bits of late 20th century debris.
