Description
The development site lies south of the village of Mattersey Thorpe, which is located 7.5km south-east of Bawtry and 13.5km north of Retford. The site is accessed from Breck Lane with the construction of a residential development to the north Road and farmland to the east, west and south.
The proposed development area comprises an area of rough pasture and rubble from recently demolished agricultural buildings. The area covers the area of 1.7 Ha.
Nine 35m by 2m and three 20m by 2m evaluation trenches were excavated. Deposits of topsoil and subsoil were removed by mechanical excavator to reveal sand natural deposits.
The features in three trenches relate to former field boundaries dating to the post-medieval enclosure. They probably relate to former field boundaries visible on first edition Ordnance Survey map.
The site has no archaeological potential.
