Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching has been undertaken to evaluate the surviving sub-surface archaeology on land east of Breck Lane, Mattersey Thorpe, Nottinghamshire. The geophysical survey undertaken in 2020 demonstrated contamination and disturbance of the land had a detrimental effect on the geophysical survey results.
The site was 1.7 hectares in size. Nine 35m by 2m and three 20m by 2m evaluation trenches were excavated. Deposits of topsoil and subsoil were removed by mechanical excavator to reveal sand natural deposits.
Remains of former field boundaries were located in three trenches. Modern services were uncovered in two trenches.
