Description

The site is located 600 m south of the village of Fernwood and 4 km south-east of Newark on Trent, in the county of Nottinghamshire. The survey comprises 15.6 ha of agricultural land, currently utilised for cultivation. The site is bounded by further agricultural land to the north, the A1 to the west, the B6326 to the east, and the conjunction of the A1 and B6326 to the south. The detailed gradiometer survey was undertaken using four SenSys FGM650/3 gradiometers spaced at 1 m intervals and mounted on a non-magnetic cart. Data were collected with an effective sensitivity of 0.03 nT at a rate of 100 Hz, producing intervals of 0.08 m along transects spaced 4 m apart. The survey has not identified any anomalies that can be confidently interpreted as archaeology. Numerous discrete anomalies provide weak evidence for pit features possibly associated with refuse or extraction pits. Given the close proximity of such activity to the east and west of the survey area, this interpretation perhaps carries some credibility. However, they could equally be natural pertaining to natural variation in the magnetic susceptibility of the geological deposits. The anomalies identified appear to evidence more recent agricultural activity on the site. No clearer evidence associated with earlier periods has been identified despite the proximity of such activity. Two former boundaries have been identified. These correspond to features visible on late 19th – early 20th century OS mapping. While an earlier origin cannot be ruled out for the boundary feature identified to the north of the survey area, it equally cannot be asserted. Areas of increased magnetic responses have been identified that are associated with the land use as RAF Balderton in the mid-20th century. The remaining anomalies identified are thought to be modern. Numerous land drains and services are noted traversing the survey area.
