Title Land at Fernwood, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire: Detailed Gradiometer Survey Report
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2021

Abstract/Summary

A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Great North Road, Balderton, Nottinghamshire. The project was commissioned with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for the development of the site. The site comprises a southern end of a single arable field located between the A1 to the west and Great North Road to the east. The survey covers an area of 15.6 ha and was undertaken between 22 and 24 November 2021. The survey has not identified any anomalies that can be confidently interpreted as archaeology. Weak evidence for pit features possibly associated with refuse or extraction pits has been identified. However, they could equally be natural pertaining to natural variation in the magnetic susceptibility of the geological deposits. Two former boundaries have also been identified. These correspond to features visible on 19th – early 20th century OS mapping. Areas of increased magnetic responses have been identified that are associated with the land use as RAF Balderton in the mid-20th century. The remaining anomalies identified are thought to be modern. Numerous land drains and services are noted traversing the survey area.
