Description

The site is located to the north side of the town of Newark-on-Trent and 28.7 km north-east of Nottingham, in the county of Nottinghamshire. The survey comprises 7.1 ha of recreational playing fields. The site is bounded by industrial buildings to the north and east, and residential properties to the south and west. The detailed gradiometer survey was undertaken using four Bartington Grad-01-1000L gradiometers mounted on a non-magnetic cart at 1 m intervals. Data were collected with an effective sensitivity of 0.03 nT at a rate of 10 Hz, producing intervals of 0.15 m along transects spaced 4 m apart. The detailed gradiometer survey has not identified any anomalies of definite archaeological origin. Several trends that have been identified are thought likely to relate to historical agricultural activity. However, it is equally likely these anomalies pertain to modern land management strategies. A large area of increased magnetic response to the north-west corresponds to the location of a former pavilion dating to the latter half of the 20th century. It is possible the square anomaly to the centre of the survey area could be the wicket of a former cricket pitch. The large number of ferrous responses identified by the survey is likely to be the result of modern activity and land use, as well as metallic debris. It should be noted that there was a general lack of anomalies of archaeological potential elsewhere on site. The remaining anomalies identified are thought to be modern, pertaining to the modern land use, including the modern pavilion and basketball court. Some of the anomalies can be linked to the use of the survey area as playing fields including the goal posts, as well as and the later 20th century use as allotments in the south-east.
