A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Yorke Drive, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. The project was commissioned with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application for the development of the site as a residential estate. The site comprises recreational fields located in Newark-on-Trent, covering an area of 7.1ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken on 30th January 2019. The detailed gradiometer survey has not identified any anomalies of definite archaeological origin. A large area of increased magnetic response towards the north-western extent of the site corresponds to the location of a former pavilion dating to the latter half of the 20th century. Several trends that have been identified are likely to relate to historic land use. However, it is possible these anomalies pertain to modern land management and/or drainage. The large amount of ferrous responses identified by the survey is likely to be the result of modern activity and land use, as well as metallic debris. It is possible this could obscure some archaeological remains with weaker magnetic properties. However, further investigation may be required to confirm this, and no such anomalies have been identified elsewhere within the survey area. The remaining anomalies identified are modern in origin, including those associated with the pavilion and basketball court. In addition, some of the anomalies can be linked to the use of the survey area as playing fields including the goal posts, as well as and the later 20th century use as allotments in the south-east.
