Description

The proposed development site is located on land immediately north of Stragglethorpe Road, approximately 1 km south of Radcliffe on Trent. The survey area covers 48ha across one field consisting of arable cultivation, which was stubble at the time of survey. The survey was carried out using a Sensys MAGNETO® MXPDA ATV towed cart mounted magnetometer system. Data was collected using zig-zag traverses alongside a constant stream of GPS data collected through a Trimble R10 GPS, enabling the collected data to be spatially georeferenced without the need for a pre-determined grid system. The magnetic gradiometer survey has resulted in the identification of a group of ephemeral linear trends and spreads of material in the north west corner of the survey area which may relate to archaeological activities, most likely field boundaries or enclosures of uncertain date. The surveys have also clearly identified anomalies associated with mapped former field boundaries, and earlier ploughing regimes within the survey area. Though the powerlines crossing the site have caused some interference, this has not impeded the survey interpretation. Given the identification of historical features, ploughing trends and a few anomalies of possible archaeological origin, we can confidently infer that if there were substantial archaeological remains present within the survey area, they would have been identifiable in the survey results. The survey results have confirmed the long-term agricultural use of the area, with potential steam ploughing over much of it, and small area of ridge and furrow cultivation along the southern margin.
