Description

The development zone that required monitoring, approximately 728m² in extent, is located on Church Street, within the north edge of the Scheduled area. The groundworks involved the excavation of a large deep pit for an inspection chamber on the north side of Church Street and a smaller pit on the south side for a drain junction, connected by cuts for drains against the north and side kerbs and across the width of the road. The shallow depth of the majority of the groundwork excavations avoided the disturbance of possible underlying undisturbed archaeological deposits. The inspection chamber pit on the north side of the road revealed several layers of makeup material, largely already disturbed by the intervention some 40+ years ago of the drainage culvert located at its base, with formerly excavated material redeposited over the culvert cap. Overall, the layers appeared to be dumped material containing lumps of clay and brick fragments, with one layer containing what appeared to be ash and cinder rake-out from a hearth, and were considered to be made ground possibly associated with previous raising ofthe road surface. Fragments of stone observed against the south-facing edge of the pit may be the remnants of a wall line, as they appeared parallel to the line of the road. Close inspection of the stones in situ was not possible due to the depth of excavations but most appeared to be uncut, although the one stone recovered possibly shows slight evidence of tooling and may indicate reuse from a former building. The stone roof tile that was also recovered from the redeposited material may be best interpreted as residual material from past demolition, used with other materials to make up the ground level.
