Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording took place during selective drainage works on Church Street, Southwell as part of a flood alleviation scheme. The ‘site’ occupies the line of Church Street, to the south-east of Southwell Minster and the centre of the modern town. A section of the flood alleviation drain in the road fell within the designated area of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Southwell Roman Villa. Scheduled Monument consent was granted to the contractors for relevant groundworks on provision that the work was monitored by an archaeologist. The groundworks involved the excavation of a large deep pit for an inspection chamber on the north side of Church Street and a smaller pit on the south side for a drain junction, connected by cuts for drains against the north and side kerbs and across the width of the road. The deepest excavation for the inspection chamber on the north edge of the road exposed several layers of made ground and backfill; all previously disturbed by the installation of a deep drain culvert. A fragment of post-medieval/modern roof tile and a fragment of masonry were recovered from the pit. The excavation on the south side of the road also revealed made ground and bedding layers for the road surface, but no significant archaeological deposits.
