Description

The Site comprises c.90ha over tenfields situated to the southwest of Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire. At the time of survey ground conditions consisted of either stubble, pasture or a young crop. The Site is bounded by woodland to the north and south, and by further agricultural fields to the east and west. Colliery Way runs parallel to the western extent of Site, with residential housing and farm buildings also being found along this border. The cart-based survey was undertaken using an eight channel SenSYS MX V3 system containing eight FGM650 sensors. Readings are taken every 20MHz (between 0.05 and 0.1m). The geophysical survey has detected a single magnetic anomaly of definite archaeological origin in the northwest of one field, in the form of a rectilinear partial enclosure. Agricultural anomalies were recorded across the Site, including modern ploughing regimes, possible medieval or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, former field boundaries and farm tracks. Geological anomalies are also visible within the dataset which primarily correspond with changes in the Site’s topography toward the east. Magnetic disturbance around the periphery of fields surveyed corresponds to proximity to metal fencing. Uncertain responses have been detected within two fields, which may be archaeological in nature but are equally likely to have modern agricultural or geological origins.
