Description

The development area is located south of Bawtry, to the south of the village of Scrooby and north-east of Ranskill. The development area is bounded to the west and north by agricultural land and to the east and south by sand and gravel workings. The total development area occupies approximately 11.3 ha. The topsoil/overburden was removed in level spits using a 360ยบ excavator equipped with a toothless bucket, under the constant supervision and instruction of the monitoring archaeologist. Machine excavation proceeded in level spits until the archaeological horizon or the natural geology was exposed. Where necessary, the surfaces of archaeological deposits were cleaned by hand. A sample of archaeological features and deposits was hand-excavated, sufficient to address the aims of the excavation. Spoil derived from machine stripping and hand-excavated archaeological features was visually scanned for the purposes of finds retrieval. The ditches observed during this phase of SMR appear to line up with the cropmarks visible on aerial photographs. This may suggest they are part of the wider Romano-British field system excavated to the east, which also corresponded with the cropmarks, although no dating was recovered during this phase to confirm the features are contemporary the presence of a false oatgrass tuber may support a Romano-British date. The coal and clinker within the environmental samples would suggest the ditches are more recent and if fact later medieval/post-medieval, although these findings could signify later contamination.
