Abstract/Summary

Monitoring of the removal of overburden was undertaken as well as an archaeological excavation within a 0.8 ha land parcel to the south of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, prior to the extraction of aggregates. Cropmark evidence indicates a series of enclosures and associated field system in and around the quarry site. Previous phases of archaeological work to the east of the current strip area have identified field systems of both Romano-British and post-medieval date. Evidence for small scale post-medieval gravel extraction was also found during these previous excavations. The current phase of excavation revealed two ditches, which appeared on north-east to south-west alignments 88 m apart, as well as a third linear feature in between on a ENE–WSW orientation. Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs suggest the two ditches may be a continuation of those found during excavations to the east, although no artefacts were retrieved to determine a contemporary date. The ENE–WSW linear feature is the continuation of the existing hedgerow immediately to the west of the strip area, which was removed within the excavation area to facilitate the works. Two environmental samples were taken. These contained minimal preserved environmental evidence, although some charred plant remains from cereal grain, a false oatgrass tuber, seeds of lesser stitchwort and brambles were recovered, as well as charcoal from oak and heather.
