Description

The site is located at 9 Leeming Lane North, approximately 0.5km to the east of the centre of Mansfield Woodhouse. A trial trenching strategy was agreed, comprising two 25m x 1.8m trenches, each trench was adjusted to 3.0m wide due to equipment availability. In each trench, topsoil, subsoil and underlying non-archaeological deposits were removed, in spits no greater than 0.1m thick, by a 40ton 360° tracked excavator with a toothless ditching bucket. The process was repeated until the first archaeologically significant or natural horizon was exposed. One trench contained an interesting albeit undated sequence of windblown sands with occasional periods of stability where vegetation has formed across the sand layer. Also of note was a former soil horizon sandwiched between windblown sands. These former surfaces, although undated, may be of some age due to the depth of the sequence. The trench also contained made ground and material associated with the demolition of the former dwelling, garage and workshop. A vertically sided and flat based linear feature was also noted in the trench. This was not seen on any Ordnance Survey mapping and on balance of probability it is most likely a backfilled machine excavated trench. The other trench also identified elements of the 20th century structures that recently occupied the site.
