Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken at 9 Leeming Lane North, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning consent for demolition and site clearance of existing buildings and construction of two retail units, ancillary customer parking and associated works.
No archaeological deposits or artefacts have been recovered from the site previously. A small Iron Age hillfort is recorded to the northwest of the site, and the settlement is not recorded in the Domesday Survey so is of medieval or later date.
Two 25m x 1.8m evaluation trenches were excavated within the footprint of the site. These identified a sequence of windblown sands and former surfaces, as well as a buried soil, all of unknown date. A single undated linear feature may be a former ditch, but is more likely a former machine-cut trench.
The proposed development of the site is likely to have minimal impact upon archaeological deposits, although it should be noted that there will likely be impact on the undated sequence of deposits identified in one trench.
