Description

The permitted development encompasses c.3,755sqm and is located within the historic core of medieval Beeston. The site is currently a car park covered by a mixture of asphalt, concrete, compacted gravel and hard standing, having formerly been occupied by a multistorey car park and a 1960s fire station, both of which have been demolished. The site was subject to archaeological evaluation trenching. The evaluation comprised of the excavation of six trial trenches, equating to 10% of the development by area. Each trench was 20m long by 3.6m wide (double width), positioned to evaluate the impact of the permitted development main pile concentrations, to determine the level of destruction by previous developments and to determine if there is any scope for preservation in the central courtyard of the new building. All five trenches contained modern features in the form of concrete foundations, brick walls, tarmac/concrete surfaces, drains, and culverts. Previous buildings and structures have caused considerable disturbance, having a detrimental effect on the preservation of archaeology within the development area. There was no evidence that archaeological remains survived, relevant to the growth and development around the historic core of Beeston.
