Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Station Road Car Park (Central), Beeston, Nottinghamshire, prior to permitted development. The work was undertaken to inform and enable discharge to the condition for a watching brief, scalable to strip/map excavation, prior to mobilising construction by demonstrating the absence of archaeological remains within the site. A total of six evaluation trenches were laid out, each 3.6m by 20m, which comprised a total area of 432m2 and equated to 10% of the overall development. All five trenches contained modern features in the form of concrete foundations, brick walls, tarmac/concrete surfaces, drains, and culverts. Previous buildings and structures have caused considerable disturbance, having a detrimental effect on the preservation of archaeology within the development area. There was no evidence that archaeological remains survived, relevant to the growth and development around the historic core of Beeston.
