Description

The site lies on the western edge of the central area of the town of Mansfield, and is bounded to the east by Quaker Way, to the south-east by a municipal car park, to the south by Station Road, to the west by Belvedere Street, and to the north by Service Area B of the nearby shopping centre. The 1880 map shows the western area of the site along the Belvedere frontage is occupied by rows of terraced housing, while the site of the burial ground and adjacent Congregationalist Chapel are featured at the eastern end of the site off Chapel Place. The O.S map of 1900 shows relatively little change to the proposal site. The burial ground is indicated by 'Gr' and by 1917 the burial ground is now indictaed as 'BG'. The first stage of the on-site archaeological works comprised the strip, map and reocrd of the area of the former burial ground. This involved the continual archaeological monitoring of the mechanical excavation of this area, situated in the eastern portion of the site, suing a JCB mechanical excavator fitted with a 1.6m wide toothless ditching bucket. The remains of several burials as well as various fragments of disarticulated human bone were recovered and recorded, and separately bagged for eventual reinterrment. The relict cemetery clearance encountered six grave cuts and yielded three truncated skeletons and one complete specimen. Two of the boundary walls of the former cemetery were observed and recorded. The partial extent of this feature was determined and locations confirmed by historical map regression.
