Description

The survey area was located c. 400m east of Bunny and a c. 1km to the north of Costock. A gradiometer survey was undertaken across 10 fields under arable cultivation. The survey area is surrounded by further fields and woodlands. The site is located near Wysall Road to the south, Nottingham Road to the east and bordered by the Holy Convent to the east. Method: Magnetic Instrument: Bartington Instruments Grad-13 Digital Three-Axis Gradiometer Traverse Interval: 1m Sample Interval: 200Hz reprojected to 0.125m The geophysical results identified anomalies of both probable archaeological and possible archaeological origin. These anomalies likely represent infilled ditch features. Probable archaeological anomalies have been interpreted as ring ditches, and a complex of enclosures, including elements of possible settlement activity. Possible archaeological anomalies have also been identified however their morphology is unclear and confident interpretations cannot be given. Several anomalies have been identified as Industrial/Modern and are likely related to a pump house visible on historical OS mapping. The geophysical results reflect the long-term agricultural use of the survey area in the form of former mapped and unmapped field boundaries, ridge and furrow regimes, drainage systems and extant agricultural tracks. Modern ploughing was also identified across parts the survey area. Multiple anomalies in the southwest of the survey area have been identified as natural in origin. Likely as a result of natural processes in relation to a nearby stream. Several anomalies throughout the site have been classified as undetermined because it has not been possible to definitively determine whether these anomalies are the result of archaeological, agricultural, or natural processes.
