Description
The Site is located on land south of Staythorpe village, approximately 3.5 miles west of the town of Newark. The Site is situated across agricultural land which is located to the north of the A71 and is bisected by Dalmahoy Road.
The gradiometer survey was carried out using a Bartington Non-Magnetic Cart. Data was collected using zig-zag traverses alongside a constant stream of GPS data collected through a Trimble R10 GPS.
A total of 11ha were surveyed using the Bartington cart.
The survey has identified features relating to post-medieval field boundaries and land use/agricultural use. The results have not identified any remains likely to be earlier than the post-medieval period, though the anomalies of unclear origin along the banks of a former watercourse may relate to production activity of unknown date.
Further uncertain trends and patches of stronger enhancement have also been identified but have proven difficult to characterise due to this ‘noise’. Although again an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out, these anomalies are equally likely to have been caused by natural or more recent agricultural processes.
A substantial paleochannel has been identified curving along the northern edge of the survey area. The road and field layout in this area seems to follow the former watercourse, though the nature of any relationship between the two cannot be discerned from geophysical data.
