Description

The site occupies an area farmland extending approximately 1.5km from south-east to north-west, and located between the Chesterfield Canal to the west, and the A638 to the east. Thee survey amounts in total to c. 104.4 ha. Readings were collected along transects 1m apart using Bartington 1m fluxgate gradiometers, and are plotted at 25cm intervals along each transect. Ground conditions at this site appear to be satisfactory for a magnetic survey of this kind, as is indicated by the widespread detection of minor cultivation effects and narrow ditches which appear to relate to land drainage, but the most conspicuous findings are seen on gravel soils on the higher ground towards the north-west of the evaluation area in one field. The findings here include clearly defined rectilinear enclosures and settlement features, probably of mainly Romano-British date, together with traces of a surrounding field system. This activity extends into a further field, but no comparable findings can be identified across the remainder of the evaluation area. Findings elsewhere in the survey (other than cultivation effects and land drains) include a distinct former boundary, a probable infilled pond, and magnetic disturbances which are likely to indicate minor naturally silted channels or hollows on lower ground at the south of the survey.
