Title Botany Bay Farm, Retford, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Geophysical Survey
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2018

Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey has been undertaken as an initial phase of an archaeological evaluation of a proposed gravel extraction site near Retford, Nottinghamshire. The survey has identified a clearly defined archaeological site towards the west of the evaluation area, but has not provided any clearly interpretable evidence for the presence of archaeological features or remains across the remainder of the site. The site amounts in total to c. 104.4 ha. The findings here include clearly defined rectilinear enclosures and settlement features, probably of mainly Romano-British date, together with traces of a surrounding field system. This activity extends into a further field, but no comparable findings can be identified across the remainder of the evaluation area. Findings elsewhere in the survey (other than cultivation effects and land drains) include a distinct former boundary, a probable infilled pond, and magnetic disturbances which are likely to indicate minor naturally silted channels or hollows on lower ground at the south of the survey.
