Description
The site is located to the west of Wood Lane, on the outskirts of South Wheatley and Sturton-le-Steeple, near to Retford, Nottinghamshire. The site extends across eleven arable fields amounting to 95.3 ha of land. The site is bounded to the north by Oswald Beck, to the west by more agricultural land and to the south by High House Road and the Retford-Gainsborough railway.
The trial trenching methodology entailed the excavation of 248 trenches, measuring 50m long and 2m wide.
Evaluation trenching at Wood Lane revealed a small area containing a high density of features representing Romano-British occupation in close proximity to Oswald Beck. These features appear broadly contemporary with each other, given their similar fills, alignments and finds. Some prehistoric pottery sherds were recovered; however, they exhibit a potentially broad date range which limits any further interpretation of prehistoric activity in the area. Roman finds were not unexpected, due to the proximity to a known Roman road, Wheatley Road. Indeed, two trenches provide substantial evidence of Roman activity in the area, with the presence of numerous intercutting ditches within one of the two trenches implying activity over a long period.
The discovery of Roman tile fragments within some of the features, namely two ditches and the large quantities of Roman pot recovered from two trenches, suggest the presence of Roman structural elementsin the nearby area that may have been narrowly missed by the trial trenching. Additionally, the presence of Samian ware pottery in many of the Roman features, in addition to the copper alloy brooch, brooch pins and worked bone hair pin, suggest a relatively high-status population.
Analysis of the animal bone fragments recovered during this scheme of works follows a known pattern recognised for Roman era domestication. However, few of the recovered remains exhibited signs of butchery or burning, thus little further information can be gleaned from them aside that they are likely discarded food remains.
