Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land off Wood Lane, Retford, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning consent for the development of a solar farm.
The site is located to the west of Wood Lane, on the outskirts of South Wheatley and Sturton-le-Steeple, near to Retford, Nottinghamshire. The site extends across eleven arable fields, amounting to 95.3 ha of land.
A Roman road (now Wheatley Road) is known to run through the nearby villages of North and South Wheatley, in addition to Roman burials including that of a Roman centurion (MNT8678), roughly 1.3km northwest of the site. There is further Roman activity in the broader area, namely artefact scatters 1.3km southeast and 1.1km northwest (MNT4929 and MNT8677) and Roman pottery within Wheatley Wood 3.3km to the north.
