Description

The Site lies on the east side of the A46, north of the A17, on Overfield Park. Overfield Park is an ongoing new development along Godfrey Drive which lies on the north side of the A17 close to Winthorpe Roundabout. This area was formerly part of the WWII Winthorpe Airfield, with the east-west runway lying to the north of the Site. The Site comprises two segments, one to the north of Godfrey Drive and the other to the south. To the north of Godfrey Drive the land lies to the north of the new Starbucks, c.9.12 acres extending along the A46 and east along the south side of the former runway. South of Godfrey Drive the Site extends east along the A17 up to the boundary of the John Deere dealership, coving an area of c.8.75 acres. The evaluation comprised nineteen 50m x 2m trenches that excavated across the Site. Trenches were initially machine excavated using an excavator fitted with a smooth blade. The trenches were subsequently manually cleaned and assessed, with identified archaeological features sample excavated. Of the nineteen trenches that were excavated, nine of the trenches were blank. This evaluation has established the presence of buried remains across the Site. Primarily composing of ditches on varying alignments with scattered pits and postholes, the character of these features is interpreted as generally agricultural with likely multiple phases represented however dating evidence is very limited.
