Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on land at Overfield Park, off the A17 at Winthorpe near Newark, where a planning application for warehouses and offices is being prepared.
Overfield Park is part of the former WWII Winthorpe Airfield which has been redeveloped and is used today with the majority of the runways surviving today and dividing the area. This area is part of a wide landscape of later prehistoric and Romano-British occupation, the A46 along the northwest Site boundary marks the line of the Roman road the Fosse Way and recent investigations c.350m south of the Site have discovered a complex of rectilinear enclosures indicating settlement and associated field systems.
This evaluation has established the presence of buried remains across the Site. Primarily composing of ditches on varying alignments with scattered pits and postholes, the character of these features is interpreted as generally agricultural with likely multiple phases represented however dating evidence is very limited.
