Description

Excavation of 4 trenches around the castle gatehouse. Trench 4 was extended into a further small programme of investigative work. Trenches 1 -3 The stratigraphic sequence revealed modern and Victorian landscaping had truncated any earlier deposits or features and no traces of medieval earthworks were encoun-tered. The survival an C18 century built remains in SE end of Trench 2 at a relatively shal-low depth do raises the possibility that earlier deposits and features may survive below later buildings across this part of the site. Trench 4, immediately west of the Gatehouse revealed a more complex sequence of walls and deposits. Medieval walls were exposed at approximately 0.30m beneath the modern ground surface. Further evidence for the C11 bailey rampart. Position of the original west curtain wall: the excavation revealing that it was not positioned here as previously expected. The excavation also revealed the nature of the C12 west flanking tower of the gatehouse, fourteenth century ranges and C15 or C16 additions. All finds were collected from 28 separate contexts and unstratified deposits around the gatehouse remains. The main classes of material present are animal bone and pottery dating from the fourteenth-nineteenth centuries. Several late medieval to early post-medieval wares are identified by fabrics and glazes, some of which are likely to be local Nottinghamshire ware types. Several fragments of mortar, plaster and CBM have been retained from structural remains on the site. The earliest artefact from the site is a prehistoric flint scraper from an ash-filled deposit (4038). The earliest pottery from the site dates to the fourteenth century.
