Description

Station Road branches southeast from the Carlton Hill / Burton Road junction, swinging round the topography to Carlton Station which is little more than a platform at a level crossing around 70m south of the site. The site at No.6 is a vacant plot, partially covered with a hardcore / tarmac surface. It comprises approximately 500m² of land which has recently been cleared of naturally seeding vegetation. The ground investigation works took place on 19th and 23rd September 2024. Monitoring and recording works consisted of one machine dug test pit (TP), two California Bearing Ratio (CBR) pits, three water percolation test pits (WTP) and two window samples (WS). The archaeological monitoring during the ground investigation works identified no archaeological features or artefacts. The presence of frequent modern waste material suggests that the site has been developed and occupied over the last 150 years. Based on the layers and levels observed during the monitoring, it appears that much of the demolition material from the removal of the buildings on site has been used to level it. The presence of the made ground overlying the natural geology indicates that any archaeology which had been present on site may have been impacted by previous development on site.
