Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological monitoring & recording was undertaken on land No. 6 Station Road, Carlton.
The site lies at the base of a steep sided ridge, with the historic core of Carlton on its summit. The 1840’s construction of the railway and a small station just 70m along the road from the site led to expansion along Station Road, with the site being part of a late 19th century yard. All buildings at the site have been cleared, but some of the hardcore yard surfacing remains.
A total of eight ground investigation tests were undertaken during the monitoring. Three window samples, two California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test pits, two percolation test pits and a single ground investigation test pit. No archaeological features or deposits were encountered.
