Description

The Fairham Pastures development site is located directly to the south of the town of Clifton, within the north side of Barton in Fabis parish, in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire. The current works area, Phase 7, is located east of the centre of the application area. The whole of the works area measures some 11.5 hectares: the area to be evaluated consists of portions of two large arable fields divided by drainage ditches, in an area that is to consist partly of residential development and partly of structural landscaping. The archaeological evaluation consisted of eight trenches, each measuring 30m x 2m. As the geophysical survey identified no potentially significant anomalies in this area, the trenches were positioned to give the widest possible spread of sampling across the site, intercepting possible linear features, while avoiding existing field boundaries and the course of the new road, which was already under construction. Of the eight trenches excavated, all were archaeologically negative. No archaeological features or finds were recovered. Despite archaeology being exposed to the north, the siting of this phase, on the side of a slope, suggests that it has been left un-utilised. This is consistent with the results of the trenching to the immediate east.
