Description

Neatholme Lane approaches Lound from the northeast. It becomes Neat Holme Lane, a track giving access to a minor crossing of the River Idle and the fields on the east bank. The site lies on the northeast periphery of Lound, a field of approximately 6.3 acres between the houses fronting onto Town Street and Linghurst Lake. The proposed wildlife pond lies in the southern half of the field. The evaluation works consisted of three trenches, each measuring 30m x 2m. The trenches were arranged across the footprint of the pond. The trenches were opened under archaeological supervision to the first archaeologically significant horizon, the maximum safe working depth, or the natural geology, whichever was encountered first. Archaeological deposits encountered were then to be cleaned and defined by hand. Of the three trenches excavated, beyond the presence of plough scars, all were archaeologically negative, and no archaeological finds were recovered. The results of the trenching are consistent with the geophysical survey, indicating that the site has been primarily used for agricultural purposes (evidence of ploughing) and lays on the periphery of the main settlement.
