Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on land north of Neatholme Lane, where a new wildlife pond is planned.
Around Lound there are extensive areas of cropmarks of circular and rectilinear enclosures and other features thought to reflect multiphase acidity in the prehistoric and Roman periods. West of the site are earthworks of linear and discrete features of unknown date.
Geophysical survey of the site has identified no obvious anomalies of archaeological origin. The southern half of the site has magnetic variation suggestive of modern ground disturbance, while the north of the site had little variation. The evaluation investigates the results of the survey and more specifically the footprint of the proposed pond to inform any mitigation required in association with the proposals.
Of the three trenches excavated, all were archaeologically negative, and no finds were recovered from site.
