Description

The geophysical survey area (GSA) covers approximately 53 hectares and included all the agricultural land outwith the curtilage of the power station site, excluding any cable routes. The GSA is bounded to the north by the former power station site and the railway that serviced it, to the east and south-west by Hollowgate Lane and arable agricultural land and to the south-east by the village of High Marnham. Sparrow Lane splits the GSA into a (smaller) eastern part and a much larger, western part. The survey was undertaken using four Bartington Grad601 sensors mounted at 1m intervals (1m traverse interval) onto a rigid frame. The system was programmed to take readings at a frequency of 10Hz (allowing for a 10–15cm sample interval) on roaming traverses (swaths) 4m apart. The survey has identifed anomalies consistent with post-medieval and more recent agricultural activity as indicated on historical mapping. The most numerous anomalies are due to ploughing, either modern or older ridge and furrow cultivation and to field drains. At least two possible enclosures have been identifed at the extreme easternmost part of the GSA, located just of the food plain of the river Trent and on the first river terrace. The anomalies are low magnitude, fragmentary and resolution is poor due to the overhead electricity wires and by an area of magnetic disturbance immediately to the south. It is therefore possible that the potential archaeological remains may be more extensive than indicated by the survey. Based on the geophysical survey results the archaeological potential of the GSA is assessed as low except for immediately adjacent to the possible enclosures where the potential is assessed as moderate.
